Sunday Morning Adult Bible Study
Christianity’s Influence on American Literature
Sundays, 9:30-10:30 am
Fellowship Hall
January 4-February 15
Led by Larry Cameron
A nation’s culture is defined in large part by its literature. Since many of our earliest settlers came seeking freedom to practice their Christian faith, much of what they wrote reflects a rich Biblical heritage. Writers in following generations continued that tradition.
We will examine poetry and prose selections from more than a dozen famous American writers, including Anne Bradstreet, John Greenleaf Whittier, Countee Cullen, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Stephen Crane. This study will reveal how widespread and enduring has been the Bible’s influence on our literature.
All materials will be provided in each session. Please bring your Bible as we trace the links between Scripture and each literary selection. Some will be available.
