Council / Call Committee Update (8/25/19)

Notice of Senior Pastor Call Service Announcement

The Council met on Tuesday, July 30th, to discuss the next steps in our Call Process. Pastor Merker, our Circuit Visitor, came at our request to provide additional “Spiritual Guidance”.

At the start of the meeting, a recent communication from Pastor Morris was shared where he recommended that we move forward with the 2 Senior Pastor candidates due to the uncertainty of the length of his recovery.

The Senior Pastor Call Service will be held on Wednesday, August 28 at 7:00 pm in the Sanctuary.

Pastor Merker provided an outline of the proposed Call Service. It is a formal worship service. The intention of the Call Service is for us to Take in the Holy Spirit and come together and allow the Holy Spirit to Work during our worship time. At the start of the service, the Council will review the voting procedure and answer questions only about the voting procedure. The votes will take place during the service.

After much discussion, our voting ballot will include Pastor Adle, Pastor Blanke, and an “Other” check box. The “Other” box is designed for members who do not wish to call either of the Senior Pastor candidates.

To call a new Senior Pastor requires, according to our Constitution, a super majority vote (2/3rds) of the members present. Per our legal documents, member must be present to vote (no proxy voting). The vote total is based on all the voting members that have signed in. The results of each ballot will be counted by Council members, and then announced. All ballots will be retained.

The procedure that will be used in the voting is as follows:

1.  After the first vote, if a candidate or “Other” obtains a 2/3 vote, that person has been elected.

-  If no candidate receives a 2/3 majority, an additional vote will take place.

-  If a candidate or “Other” obtains less than 15% of the vote, this person or “Other” is removed from the next ballot.

2.  We will take up to 3 ballots to obtain a 2/3rds vote for a new Senior Pastor. If, however, on the third vote one of the candidates or “Other” receives less than 15% of the vote, then a fourth ballot will be taken.

3.  If the last vote does not produce a 2/3rd super majority, we have an impasse and no-vote is the outcome. No call can be issued. We would have to restart the Call Process. The Call Committee has advised that it would most likely be 6 weeks or more for them to fully vet another Senior Pastor candidate and have him available for a congregational visit. At this point, the Council will review next steps in the Call Process with the Call Committee.

At the conclusion of our meeting, the Council affirmed the Call Committee. We believe that the Call Committee is formed through the working of the Holy Spirit and that the Holy Spirit has brought insight into their work. Their continued due diligence is greatly appreciated.

Continue to keep our Church in your prayers and trust that He is in charge and has already chosen the one to lead RLC forward.

Council / Call Committee Update (8/1/19)

Senior Pastor Divine Call Service Announcement

The Council met on Tuesday night, July 30th, to discuss the next steps in our Call Process.

The Council is recommending that the initial tentative date for the Divine Service be moved from August 14th to August 28th. This date will allow more members to be present.

Call Committee Update (7/28/19)

By faith, we recognize that our Heavenly Father has already determined who will be our new Senior Pastor. The Call Committee was established by the Church Council, and our role is to be led by the Holy Spirit in the process of selecting one or more candidates for interviewing.

Pastor Adle and Pastor Blanke visited us this past week. During the in-person visits, the candidates met with the Call Committee, Council, staff, and the congregation. Audio recordings of the forums are posted online so that those who were unable to attend can hear the discussions.

July 23rd Forum with Pastor Adle - http://bit.ly/pastoradleforum

July 25th Forum with Pastor Blanke - http://bit.ly/pastorblankeforum

Please continue to pray for Pastor Morris and his family (the third pastor we invited to visit us), who was in an auto accident recently. No new information is available; we will share updates about his status as we hear news. Reminder – the congregational Q&A forum with Pastor Morris originally scheduled for August has been cancelled.

Please continue to hold August 14 for our congregational Call Service. We anticipate providing a final date by next week – it will not be earlier than August 14. At this event, the congregation will gather as one church family, thank God for His guidance, celebrate our faith, and prayerfully vote. The Call Committee will not be making a recommendation at the Call Service; the Committee’s role during this phase of the process is only to help facilitate and coordinate. The decision will be made by all members of the congregation – please attend the Call Service and be part of the vote! We are required to obtain a 2/3 approval of votes that are cast. Pastor Mike Merker will lead the service, and the Council will lead the vote.

If you have questions about the process, schedule, or any other aspect of the Senior Pastor Call Committee plan, please contact the committee members. Contact information is listed at the bottom of this page.

Call Committee Update (7/21/19)

By faith, we recognize that our Heavenly Father has already determined who will be our new Senior Pastor. The Call Committee was established by the Church Council, and our role is to be led by the Holy Spirit in the process of selecting one or more candidates for interviewing.

We have sad news to share with the congregation. Pastor Morris, along with his wife and daughter, were in a car accident last week. They are all okay, but Pastor Morris was severely injured and will need time to heal. He will not be able to visit in August as planned. Please keep Pastor Morris and his family in your prayers. The Call Committee proposes to move forward with the in-person visits and Call Service with Pastors Adle and Blanke.

Three candidates have accepted our invitation for an in-person visit. Since Pastor Morris is unable to visit at this time, we will only have two in-person visits (Pastors Adle and Blanke).

During the in-person visits, the candidates will meet with the Call Committee, Council, staff, and the congregation. A summary of the schedules is listed in the announcements.

The open forum/Q&A sessions have been scheduled for the following dates. After each Q&A Forum, the congregation is invited to stay for a few extra minutes to share their thoughts and ideas with each other. We will do an audio recording of the forums and post them online so that those unable to attend can hear the discussions.

Pastor Adle: Tuesday, July 23 at 7:00 p.m.

Pastor Blanke: Thursday, July 25 at 7:00 p.m. [NOTE – this is a change from the original schedule]

Pastor Morris: Thursday, August 8 at 7:00 p.m. [NOTE – this has been cancelled]

We would like for a group of ladies to join Pastor Blanke’s wife for a trip to the Museum of Art and lunch from 10:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 26. If you are interested, please RSVP to Sara Kirkendall at 919-624-7125, .

A congregational Call Service has been scheduled for August 14 at 7:00 p.m.

Short bios of each candidate were emailed through RCB. If you did not get that email, please contact the office staff or Call Committee. We encourage you to go to the candidates’ current church websites to gain additional background.

If you have questions about the process, schedule, or any other aspect of the Senior Pastor Call Committee plan, please contact the committee members.

Call Committee Update (6/30/19)

Three of the pastor candidates we are considering for our Senior Pastor position have scheduled visits to RLC. One pastor we invited has declined our invitation since he has determined that God’s call to him is to remain where he is presently located. Bios for the three pastors that will visit us have been emailed through RCB on Sunday, June 30. The website for each of their current churches is included in the bio and the sites contain a variety of information. Some have additional information on the pastor and some have sermons posted. In addition, the LCMS website has statistics compiled for each church which might also be of interest to you.

Call Committee Update (6/16/19)

By faith, we recognize that our Heavenly Father has already determined who will be our new Senior Pastor. The Call Committee was established by the Church Council, and our role is to be led by the Holy Spirit in the process of selecting one or more candidates for interviewing.

The Call Committee has prayerfully evaluated the 11 candidates, and has recommended 4 candidates for in-person visits to the Council. The Council has prayerfully considered and confirmed these candidates. Due to planned church events and holidays, these in-person visits are anticipated to take place throughout the summer. Short bios of each candidate have been prepared, and these will be provided to the congregation soon.

During the in-person visits, the candidates will meet with the Call Committee, Council, staff, and others from congregation. The entire congregation will also have an opportunity to meet with the candidates in a forum/Q&A format, similar to what was done during the Associate Pastor process. The Call Committee, through coordination with the Council and staff, will develop an agenda / schedule closer to that time.

The names of the candidates scheduled for in-person visits will be provided to the congregation and information about the candidates (bios and links to their current church websites, if available) will be provided to the congregation before the visits. Names of other potential candidates will not be provided at interim steps to anyone outside of the committee due to confidentiality reasons.

After all of the in-person visits are complete, a Congregational Forum is anticipated to gather input and hold a discussion about the candidates. (Alternately, these forums could be held immediately following the candidate Q&A meetings.) The Call Committee will again also seek input from the Council, staff, and Circuit Visitor (Pastor Merker) during this phase.

The Call Committee could recommend moving forward with the candidates who came for a visit, or they could recommend additional in-person visits. Following this recommendation, the Council will schedule either a congregational call service (a Divine Worship Service) or a voter’s call meeting. At this event, the congregation will to gather as one church family, thank God for His guidance, celebrate our faith, and prayerfully vote. The Call Committee and Council have the option to bring multiple – or just one – of the candidates to the congregation for a vote.

More information about the schedule will continue to be provided as it is available.

If you have questions about the process, schedule, or any other aspect of the Senior Pastor Call Committee plan, please contact the committee members (contact information is listed at bottom of this page).

Senior Pastor Call Committee Update (12/16/18)

The Call Committee is reviewing the Congregational Profile and Senior Pastor position description. We will send those to the congregation for review before we send to District. The snow storm delayed us a bit, so we will move to this step to early January.

Thanks to those who filled out the profile survey! We received responses from 180 people. This 3-question survey was open through December 12 (we left it open a few extra days because of the storm). We will email results next week. The results will be incorporated into the profile, but also provide terrific input for many others in the church including the Council, staff, and volunteers organizing educational and fellowship events.

We received 18 Senior Pastor nominations from the congregation. These will be sent to the District in early January to determine which of the 18 are open for a call.

Our current schedule (which has been delayed by the snow and Christmas) includes the following milestones:

    • Mid-January: Finalize draft Congregational Profile, send to congregation for review
    • Mid-January: Send nominations to District
    • End of March: Receive input and additional candidate names from District
    • April through May: Identify candidates that appear to be best suited to match RLC’s needs
    • End of May: Telephone interviews with prospective candidates
    • End of June/early July: arrange for visits for candidates that are being considered for the position

Call Committee: Don Martin and Teresa Gresham (co-chairs), Nick Cassimatis, Bob Hirt, Sara Kirkendall, Ralph Klevenow, Carmen Madler, Leah Robison, and Gary Roth. For questions or input during this process, please contact either Don (919-460-6458, ) or Teresa (919-274-5450, ).
